Propecia Consumer Information

Propecia is a drug for treating male pattern hair loss in men. It works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the male body, which is the primary cause for hair loss. The drug can be used both for preventing and treating hair loss in men. It is aimed specifically at male pattern hair loss which is characterized by thinning hairline and hair loss in the crown area as primary symptoms. The drug should be used only by adult men.

Prior to starting a course of Propecia tell your doctor if you have allergic reaction to it or similar medications such as dutasteride (Avodart). Propecia is strictly forbidden to be used by women or children. Even routine handling of the drug is restricted because its active components can be absorbed through the skin. Propecia contains strong hormonal agents that can cause severe birth defects and development issues with the unborn baby or a toddler. That is why it is important to eliminate any possibility for a woman or child to come in contact with Propecia. In case you've contacted with a crushed Propecia tablet, wash the place of contact with water and soap, and contact your doctor immediately.

Inform your doctor about any of the following conditions if you have them before being prescribed with Propecia:

  • liver issues
  • prostate cancer
  • disorder of the bladder muscle
  • stricture of urethra
  • inability to urinate

The drug should be taken in amounts prescribed by your doctor. Never increase or decrease the dose on your own, without consulting with your physician. Do not chew or crash the tablet, take it as whole with a full glass of water, with or without food. Keep the drug away from children and women in a dim, cold and dry place.

Propecia can make you dizzy after taking it, so don't get up too fast and try to avoid operating any machinery or performing hazardous tasks until you know how exactly the drug affects your awareness.

Like with any other prescription medication Propecia may cause negative side-effects to occur. In case you have allergic reaction symptoms – breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of throat or face – stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately. You can also be prone to developing some signs of male breast cancer such as pain in breasts, nipples, discharge or lumps. In case you observe any of these effects call your doctor as soon as possible.

Other less serious side-effects you may experience while taking Propecia include:

  • anticipation of passing out
  • swelling in limbs
  • testicle discomfort or pain
  • decrease in sexual drive, erectile dysfunction, orgasm difficulties
  • strange ejaculation
  • strange sensations in your breasts
  • weakness or dizziness
  • headache
  • skin rash
  • runny nose

In case you experience any of these symptoms, inform your doctor but don't stop taking Propecia. They will usually be not very severe and will wear off after some time. In case these symptoms are persistent and get only worse, contact your doctor immediately.
